Meet the Team: Si Evans9 NOV
In our latest Meet the Team, we're chatting to Designer, Graphics Operator and the chap that fixes our laptops when we break them, Si Evans.
Let’s start with a little about you. Introduce yourself and your role here at brightfive.
I’m Si, a once motorbike now push-biker, caffeine junkie, husband and father. I’ve been with brightfive for over a decade, starting as multimedia assistant but now largely a designer and graphics operator (with a sprinkling of programming). I also get stuck into the hardware and software brightfive use, in an effort to keep everything ticking along.
Tell us about some of the projects you’ve you been working on recently.
I’m known to struggle to remember what I’ve had for breakfast, let alone what I’ve been up to recently. Thankfully, I’m a good note-taker so I don’t have to rely on my constantly resetting memory.
I’ve driven nearly 2,500 miles over the last few months, working with new and returning clients. This has taken me to some of the UK’s finest destinations, including Basildon, Birmingham, Hemel Hempstead, Milton Keynes, Reading, and Rotherham. The reason for all those miles and pretty places: Christmas Roadshows. From initial concept to delivery, the Events Team (Katie, Sophie and myself) have designed and operated content and travelled to venues holding hundreds of staff and colleagues to communicate important Christmas messages. Most recently, I was inside a huge inflatable igloo with all the sights, smells and sounds you’d associate with the festive season.
When you’re not hard at work, how do you like to unwind?
I really like tech and fixing things. If I had my way, I’d have a workshop in the garage with half-fixed pieces of tech, instead of a desk drawer of consoles and circuit boards. When I’m not breaking things, I’m playing a variety of retro and current-gen games consoles, making a big mess in the kitchen, or an even bigger mess outside with the kids. My family enjoys woodland walks, camping and cycling. Having three young sons is also a great excuse to not give up cartoons, comic books, superheroes and Star Wars any time soon.
In another life, what job could you see yourself doing?
I’ve already had quite the colourful employment career: administration, animal welfare, catering, domestic services, entertainment, hospitality, industrial, military, publishing, retail and sales… you know… the usual. But there were a couple of other avenues I thought about going down. My childhood desire to be a vet evolved into wanting to be a paramedic, and my love of movies and technology saw me wanting to be CGI or special effects animator.
Finally, what’s your favourite thing about working at brightfive?
The many various (often loveable and quirky) people I get to see at the gigs I do. Audio and VT Ops, riggers, producers, showcallers and other Graphics Ops - the long days fly by when you’re in the right company of friends.
